Sales cover letter examples
A sales cover letter is a short pitch: why this job, your best proof, and a clear next step. Three paragraphs is enough.
The structure
- Why you're writing: the job title, where you saw it, and one line on why you want it.
- Your proof: your one or two best results with numbers, matched to what the advert asks for.
- The close: ask for the interview, as you'd ask for the order.
Example 1: experienced sales rep
Dear Ms Naidoo,
I'm applying for the Sales Representative (KZN South) role advertised on PNet. I've sold building supplies to independent hardware stores in KZN for four years, and your range is a natural fit for the customers I already serve.
In 2025 I achieved 112% of my R420,000 monthly target and opened 31 new accounts. Your advert asks for someone who can grow independent outlets: that's where most of my growth has come from.
I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I can do the same for you. I'm available for an interview any day next week.
Kind regards,

Example 2: first sales job
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'd like to apply for the Telesales Agent position at your Umhlanga centre. I enjoy talking to people, and I want a career where hard work shows up in what I earn.
For two years I ran a small airtime business at school, selling to about 40 regular customers, and I've worked weekends as a waitron, where I was often the top server for upsells. I speak English, isiZulu and Afrikaans, and I'm available for shifts.
I'd be grateful for the chance to show you what I can do in an interview.
Yours sincerely,
Lerato Mokoena
Example 3: sales manager
Dear Mr van Wyk,
Your Regional Sales Manager (Western Cape) role caught my attention because of your plans to grow independent retail, which is where I've built my last five years.
I lead a team of 9 reps and 2 key account managers with a R96m budget. We grew sales 35% in three years and ranked first of six regions in 2024 and 2025, while cutting staff turnover from 40% to 15%.
I'd value a conversation about your growth plans and how my team-building experience fits them.
Regards,
Anele Jacobs

Build my sales CVMistakes to avoid
- Repeating your whole CV. Pick one or two results.
- A generic letter with no company or job title. It shows you sent the same one everywhere.
- Over a page long. Aim for 150 to 250 words.
- No close. Ask for the interview.
Questions people ask
- Do I need a cover letter for a sales job?
- If the advert asks for one, yes. If it doesn't, a short one still helps you stand out, especially by email.
- How long should a cover letter be?
- About 150 to 250 words: three short paragraphs.
- Should I put the cover letter in the email or attach it?
- For email applications, put a short version in the email body and attach your CV as a PDF. Attach the letter too if the advert asks for it.
